What is waste?

No doubt everyone thinks of waste as "rubbish" to be disposed of in some way or another.

But that is not the only "waste" there is.
When a customer needs to have a job done, then everything that is not directly creating the service or product the customer requires is "waste". eg "waste of time", waste of fuel etc.

So, for example in the landscaping business, if someone orders a blocked paved drive, then all the work involved in its construction is production.

But travelling to and from the builders merchant is "waste", It may be a necessary waste, but it is not producing what the customer has ordered.

So everything that can be classified as "waste" should be viewed with idea of trying to reduce that waste to the smallest amount possible.

  • I'm sure we all try to minimise "wasted" time but if its "necessary", it isn't wasted! Perhaps T and lunch breaks etc are "wasted time" too. Maybe we "waste" too much time posting on here when we could be working lol!!!

  • is quoting a 'waste'? time/fuel/miles/effort as its not productive.. should they just get us to do the job ! i wish / occasionally it happens :)

  • Thats very true Geoff, there us necessary waste, but it pays to be able recognise if any of it is unnecessary, and keep it to a minimum.
